چکیده مقاله
The occurrence of tension cracks at the crest of slopes is a primary indicator of potential instability in open-pit mines. This study presents a comparative stability analysis of such cracks observed in the northern and eastern slopes of the Kouh-Baba open-pit mine, located within the geotechnically challenging Shemshak Formation. Comprehensive field mapping, structural geology analysis, and geomechanical characterization were conducted. The rock mass quality was estimated using the Geological Strength Index (GSI), yielding an average value of 30. The factors of safety (FS) for the current slope geometry were calculated using both the Mohr–Coulomb and Hoek–Brown failure criteria, yielding values between 1.11 and 1.13, which are below the accepted industry threshold of 1.3 for temporary slopes. Sensitivity analysis highlighted the significant influence of water pressure and GSI variation on stability. The study concludes that the slope angle must be reduced to approximately 40°–43° to achieve a safe FS. Immediate implementation of geotechnical monitoring and long-term numerical modeling are recommended to mitigate the risk of failure. This case underscores the critical need for integrating field evidence of distress, such as crest cracks, into the slope design process for safe mining operations
