چکیده مقاله
This research aimed to explore the possibility of improvement in stripping resistance of three commonly used aggregate-bitumen combinations for road pavements of the region by the technique of irradiating the aggregates surface with different types and doses of radiation prior to their mixing with the bitumen. Three aggregate sources of quarries locally known as Ubhan Shah, Margallah and Sargodha combined with ARL 60/70 pen (PG 58-22/AC-20) grade bitumen has been used. Static water immersion, rolling bottle method and bitumen bond strength tests have has been employed to effectively evaluate the stripping potential of bitumen-aggregate combinations. The study concluded that carbonaceous aggregate sources have more resistance to stripping potential as compared to siliceous aggregate source. It further concluded that the aggregate surface pre-treatment in form of irradiation by x-rays, electrons, gamma rays, and neutrons has found to be an effective tool to enhance the stripping resistance of various aggregate-bitumen combinations. General full factorial design method suggested that ‘aggregate source’, ‘aggregate condition’, and ‘duration of rolling bottle test’ are among the significant independent variables affecting the ‘percentage loss of bitumen after rolling bottle test’.
